Top nutritional tips for Winter 2012

1. Hydrating drinks help to keep our body supple and skin from drying out during the winter months. Be sure to drink six to eight glasses of pure (non tap) water per day along with vegetable juices and herbal teas.

2. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine the kidneys and bladder are the two organs that require support during winter. Foods that are supportive to these important organs are; mineral rich sea vegetables, black beans, green beans, mung bean sprouts, beetroot and kidney beans.

3. Increase anti-oxident rich vegetables to help combat cold and flu viruses such as; kale, sauerkraut, parsley, beetroot and cabbage.

4. Add warming spices and herbs to food such as; tumeric, ginger (which is great for warming up the body), garlic and onions (which have strong anti-bacterial properties), and cayanne pepper.

5. Cold weather prompts many people to reach towards comfort foods. Therefore, it is important to be mindful of not filling up on sugary snacks – which will spike blood sugar, create energy dips and cravings. Try adding in protein rich blood sugar stabilising snacks such as; walnuts, pumpkin seeds, dehydrated multi-seed crackers and hummous or veggie juices instead.
